Microsoft’s Chromecast rival will mirror the screens of Android and Windows 8

Earlier approximately a month ago Microsoft’s wireless display adapter has been seen at FCC. Now Microsoft has announced its Wireless Display Adapter, a Chromecast-sized dongle that plugs into the back of your TV, monitor, or projector and enables you to mirror content from any Miracast-enabled device. It’s not the first product of its kind on the market, but Microsoft’s offering is a small and sleek option, and it is also compatible with Android devices.

Since Miracast is an ad-hoc wireless protocol, mirroring content is not dependent on being connected to a Wi-Fi network, unlike the Chromecast. The adapter should not be confused with the (also woefully named) “Microsoft Screen Sharing for Lumia” device unveiled earlier this month, though both do share similarities in using Miracast.

Microsoft’s streaming stick will be available for $59.99 in US and Canada. Initially, the adapter will be available via Microsoft’s online and brick-and-mortar stores, as well as via Best Buy, officials said. No word so far on distribution plans beyond that.
