Adding to the competition in the OTT world Reliance’s Viacom18 has closed a deal with Warner Bros Discovery Inc to bring the high-octane content from Hollywood and stream them in on Jio Cinema. This means the content on HBO, Max Original and Warner Bros will also become available on Jio Cinema.
The media companies state that all the HBO Original, Max Original, and Warner Bros. Television series will premiere on this same day on both Jio Cinema and the aforementioned original platforms.
This is a multi-year agreement between the entertainment firms that begins its course next month. Post the deal the shares of Network18 Media and Investments saw a significant spike. It is one of the subsidiaries under the Reliance Industries.
It is evident that to strengthen the OTT presence in India and butting heads with rivals Amazon and Disney Hotstar, Warner Bros has decided to provide the streaming rights to Jio cinema.
Previously, Warner Bros had a deal with Disney Hotstar which led to the streaming of prominent HBO shows in India on Disney. However, the deal ended on 31st March and now Warner Bros has found a new partnership with Viacom18 to continue its stint in the South-East Asian region.
